Meet Mark Powers header
Mark Powers has been making up ridiculous stories since primary school and is slightly shocked to find that people now pay him to do it.

As a child he always daydreamed that his teddy bear went off on top secret missions when he was at school, so a team of toys recruited as spies seemed a great idea for a story.

He grew up in north Wales and now lives in Manchester. His favourite animals are the binturong, the aye-aye and the dodo.

Who is your favourite villain in a book?
The space-bat-angel-dragon from Ted Hughes' The Iron Man is pretty awesome.

Who is your favourite hero in a book?
Adrian Mole. (My generation's Harry Potter!)

Who or what was your biggest influence in deciding to become a writer?
My favourite comedy writers
people like Richard Curtis, the Pythons, Galton and Simpson, Clement and La Frenais.

What inspired you to write Spy Toys?
When I was a kid I used to imagine my teddy bear went off on secret missions while I was at school.

When did you start writing?
Very early! I loved writing stories in school. I sold my first piece of writing (a joke to a Radio 4 comedy show) when I was 17.

If someone wanted to be a writer what would be your number one tip for them?
Read a lot and write a lot!
